The upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy looks like a return to Marvel’s yes-nonsense roots, but we already know that most of those characters, as well as mega-villain Thanos, won’t be appearing until the third Avengers. In those, the 15-minute long battle of New York was retroactively remembered by everyone involved as a horrific terrorist attack, because, I dunno, 9/11 was a real-life thing? Iron Man dealt with PTSD, Captain America fought military-industrialization and NSA overreach, and Thor, apropos of absolutely nothing, battled with evil gray-skinned elves who want to turn the entire universe into black nothingness. That is, until the second round of single-hero Marvel films got started. The joy of Joss Whedon’s first Avengers flick lay in what it wasn’t: Eschewing all the "dark and gritty" tropes any self-respecting studio ec demands in this post-Nolan economy, it was a rollicking, almost campy blockbuster, briskly bringing together its superhero ensemble and having them mostly painlessly Hulk Smash their way through an alien invasion. Captain America: The First Avenger is a 2011 action/adventure based on the Marvel Comics character Captain America, produced by Marvel Studios, and directed by Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park III) it is the fifth film in (and in some ways, a prequel to) the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its Phase 1.
